Several sportspersons develop shin splints, additionally known as tibial stress syndrome during some stage of their lifetime. Irrespective of whether one jogs everyday or merely sprinting for catching a vehicle some day, shins splints could develop wherein one senses excruciating and hurting sensations in the shins. Though mostly these heal without any medical intervention, acute shin splints could mar one’s sport.

Shins splints are not in actuality a solitary medical condition but merely a sign of a fundamental issue that could be caused due to:

  • Muscle inflammation, frequently due to excess wear and tear.
  • Stress fracture – a small, hairline ruptures in the lower portion of the leg bones.
  • Overpronation wherein taking a step impacts in a manner that leads to foot arch collapsing that stretches the tendon and muscle in that area among flat-footed people.

Shins splintsShins splints are prevalent and the reason for thirteen percent of all sprinting injury cases. Sprinters could develop this condition following a ramp up of their workout strength or modifying their running surfaces – such as following a shift from dirt paths to tarmac. This condition is also widespread in the dancing profession.

Shin Splints – Symptoms
  • It causes dulling, throbbing pains in the front portion of the lower leg. Some individuals sense these pains while exercising or after having halted exercises. At times, the pains are unvarying.
  • Based on the precise reason, the pain could develop on any side of the shinbone or in muscles and the site being quite tender on contact. Muscular swelling could at times aggravate the nerves present in the feet leading to weakness or numbness.
Shin Splints – Diagnosis

Shin splints are diagnosed after conducting a comprehensive physical examination for checking problems. At times, X-rays or bone scanning is conducted for looking into presence of any kind of fracture. Occasionally, other tests could become requisite.

Shin Splints – Treatment

In spite of shin splints developing due to varied issues, treatment generally is similar- Resting so that the body recuperates from the causal problem.

Other approaches comprise of:
  • Cold compress applications for allaying inflammation that is to be done for about thirty minutes in approximately four hourly time intervals or till pains have subsided.
  • Inflammation allaying NSAID such as naproxen, aspirin or ibuprofen. Though associated side-effects such as greater likelihood of ulcer formation or bleeding could develop. Hence, such pain killers are to be taken sporadically except when the physician has explicitly advised on using it.
  • Arch support is an orthotics that is tailor-made or readily available to be used for one’s footwear which could be helpful for flat feet.
  • Series of movement exercises in case medically advised.
  • Neoprene sleeves for supporting and warming the affected legs.
  • Physiotherapy for muscle strengthening in the shins.
  • Atypically surgical intervention is required for acute stress fracture cases and in other issues which lead to shin splints.
Shin Splints – Prognosis

Recuperation rate is dependent on the cause and several individuals take from 3-6 months in recovering. There is no precise manner of saying when shin splints would subside. The crucial aspect is not rushing into old stringent exercise routines as in case complete healing has not occurred which could only be inflicting permanent self-damage due to the hasty comeback.

During healing period, a new-fangled non-impact activity could be taken up which would not exacerbate the condition.

Total healing of shin splints has occurred when:
  • Affected leg is showing analogous flexibility as the other leg.
  • Affected leg is feeling similarly strong as the other one.
  • Jogging, sprinting and jumping are possible while causing no pains.
  • Satisfactory X-rays results or showing healing of stress fracture.
Shin Splints – Prevention
  • Ably supported and padded footwear to be worn.
  • Ample warming up ensuring stretching of leg muscles.
  • Halting exercises no sooner has one felt aches in the shin.
  • Avoid running or playing on firm surface such as concrete.
